The café pulls you in with its authentic atmosphere, including a serene tea room that serves as a perfect backdrop for a traditional tea ceremony. When it comes to the menu, Maruiwa shines with a range of must-try delights. Guests rave about the texture – fluffy and light, it’s perfectly complemented with luscious ice cream, chewy mochi, fresh strawberries, and premium Aso milk, creating a symphony of flavors that leave you wanting more. Cathy Zhao’s mouthwatering description captures the essence of this experience, proving that even simple desserts can evoke incredible joy and satisfaction.

For those seeking a more traditional treat, the **dorayaki** served here is unforgettable. As Yu-Ting Sun shared, it strikes a perfect balance between sweetness and flavor – a true testament to Maruiwa’s culinary expertise.

Hot beverages also step into the spotlight, with their lattes and traditional rice wine (nonalcoholic) offering the perfect pairing to your sweet treats. We had a really enjoyable time at the restaurant. The dessert were absolutely delicious. The staff are attentive and friendly. We had a great conversation with Iwasaki-San and to learn that they have a room in the restaurant for the Japanese tea-ceremony. It is unfortunate that we are unable to spend an additional day in Kumamoto for the tea-ceremony. But, we will be back for it

Absolutely amazing shaved ice, especially the hojicha and strawberry ones. With the icecream there is super yummy mochi, strawberry pieces, and premium aso milk. Thank you

- another hidden gem along this street. - sweet shop founded in 1897. - come in for a cup of their traditional rice wine (non-alcoholic) while admiring their traditional tea room hidden at the back. - tea-lovers may also enjoy their variety of tea leave products that are locally farmed. Updated: - returned to enjoy their matcha bun, which was complimented by their locally sourced organic black tea. - be sure to try their seasonal flavors!

The dorayaki is very good! Love the seasonal one with cream, strawberries, red bean paste and mochi. Not too sweet! Their latte is good as well!
